For most people morals are sets of rules that we ought to obey, they tell us what is right or wrong. In an earlier paper, we examined instances of moral philosophy's influence on medical ethics. Medical ethics’ strength is its ability to deal with problems associated with novel technologies that a history lesson may not resolve. Philosophy helps us to examine our lives and Socrates’ statement about the unexamined life does seem to imply that the wise philosopher left us to draw our own conclusions about the quality of our own lives by examining ourselves. 3. This paper explores the traditional conception of ethics and ethical problems and argues to the contrary that as long as ethical problems involve value judgments and theoretical examination, there is a close relation between ethics and epistemology. The paper also explores a more systematic approach to the conclusion that as long as ethical problems are traceable to their epistemological foundation, it follows that ethical problems are off-shoots and variations of epistemological problems. Solutions to such ethical problems can only be found within the framework of epistemology. In this manner therefore, classifying moral epistemology, as a sub-field of meta-ethics [4] 1 is a mis-normal, as it should more properly have been classified as practical or applied epistemology, and even issues in first order or normative ethics are not different either.

Ethics is independent of truth, right or wrong. Character traits must be distinguished from psychological disorders like schizophrenia, mania, and depression, and from innate aspects of temperament such as shyness or being basically a happy or sad person. Whether the loss can ever be made good, or to what extent, is irrelevant to the issue of punishment -- except that the repentance of the criminal, and his ability to restore the loss, may stand as a mitigating factor in the sentencing.

Parallel with the above-mentioned Greek and Roman ethical systems runs a sceptical tendency, which rejects eery natural moral law, bases the whole moral order on custom or human arbitrariness, and frees the wise man from subjection to the ordinary precepts of the moral order. But if your decision has potentially significant effects, consider these different perspectives in striving for as much objectivity as you can. On what grounds, if not for mankind's sake?

It isn’t contentious that science could help maximize well-being of conscious creatures; or maximize devotion to a particular religion’s tenets; or maximize turnip health. There are many different ways of answering Socrates' question, and answers from the Categorical Imperative to the imperative "Sit on the couch and watch television" are equally answers to it, but Ethics attempts to find through reason the best answer to the question. We and our societies will become more perfect the more knowledge we have and the more we live according to it. Philosophers who rejected the sanguine portrayal of human nature given by the moral sense theorists followed Hobbes in arguing that rational self-interest alone could give rise to morality and decent government. Sweep aside those parasites of subsidized classrooms, who live on the profits of the mind of others and proclaim that man needs no morality, no values, no code of behavior.

Poet William Blake wrote “[man] sees all things through narrow chinks of his cavern,” expressing many skeptics’ view that our powers of perception are likely quite dim relative to the vast and complex truths of the world in itself. Also one must realize that being moral involves self denial. Leaving its justification for the third section of the Grounding (and the Second Critique), Kant proceeded to a discussion of the content and application of the categorical impetative. Take the discussion with you using tablet and mobile apps.
