Personal ethics is a category of philosophy that determines what an individual believes about morality and right and wrong. You didn't have anything to do with the trolley becoming out of control, but you realize that you happen to be right next to a "switch tracks" lever that you could pull in order to re-route the trolley from the track that the five are on to the track that only one person is on. When confronted with moral perspectives that are different from ours, we have two choices. (1) We can regard them as we would tastes in art or wines or colors as merely different from ours -- and maybe even abhorrent to us -- but not requiring any other response other than possibly to appreciate the variety that adds spice to life. (2) We can judge the differences to be of such importance that we must contend for our beliefs in the public arena against rival views, using whatever means are appropriate to prevail against them.

The first formulation of the categorical imperative appears similar to the Golden Rule: “Do not impose on others what you do not wish for yourself.” Kant’s first categorical imperative sounds like a paraphrase of the Golden Rule. Some people may be happy to go on sorting out philosophical perplexities without worrying about whether they are doing any service to their fellow men. Beings whose existence depends not on our will but on nature’s, have nevertheless, if they are irrational beings, only a relative value as means, and are therefore called things; rational beings, on the contrary, are called persons, because their very nature points them out as ends in themselves, that is as something which must not be used merely as means, and so far therefore restricts freedom of action (and is an object of respect).

The moral argument about 3. certainly involves facts, principles, and values that are accessible to all interested parties and intelligible to all rational people, although the outcome depends on some frame of reference relative to the interpreter. As philosopher David Hume famously argued, ‘is’ does not imply ‘ought.’ (ii) Ethics is not the law. However, his morals may be totally against it. The classic case addressed in ethics courses is that presented by, first, considering what the moral code would be on a large island with few people and abundant land and resources, and second, considering how that moral code would be affected by applying ethical principles to it after the island became overpopulated and extremely short of land and resources.
